Basic Tree Climbing Module ATP

ATP BTC Basic Tree ClimbingWith an intense focus on safety, modern techniques and equipment are introduced in the BTC: Basic Tree Climbing Module ATP (program) and applied to enhance climbing skills and enable efficient and productive work or play. This course consists of two days of field training in a wide variety of types and sizes of trees in a well-known camp in rural Fanling. Highly experienced trainers certified by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA); www.isa-arbor.com will conduct training in Cantonese or English.

Tree Climbing is a strenuous activity which requires a high level of coordination and dexterity. The field trainers will provide thorough hands on instruction with demonstration and hands-on coaching, often climbing the tree along side the participants. Teachers can also interact in Mandarin when required. The attendee will interact with the trainers using the latest climbing systems, throwline methods, smooth climbing ATP Jon Picker Tree Climbinghitches, crucial knots, the body thrust and tree position options for comfort and safety. The program will also include a discussion of  world-wide standards concerning tree climbing and other high-angle occupations.

This course is designed to educate participants about legislation and safety requirements as they pertain to working in trees as well as train participants in climbing techniques, gear, knots, hitches and climbing definitions. Instructors will explain, demonstrate and coach students in work positioning and fall protection techniques. Participants will practice skills learned and be mentored and coached during the course.

Basic Requirements

Basic requirements for attendance:

  • at least 18 years of age.
  • no physical or health condition that may create unreasonable risk for climber or others.
  • a minimum set of tools.
    • approved safety helmet (personal, one user)
    • Approved eye protection
    • Proper climbing clothing (proper fitting long trousers & long or short sleeved shirt)
    • Approved tree climbing boots (leather construction that supports the ankle)
    • Proper fitting gloves that permit strong grip
    • Approved, tree climbing rope – 40 meters long
    • Tree climbing lanyard  (2-N-1 recommended; two sides with three double-locking carabiners or snaps)
    • 3 Double-lock carabiners and/or double-locking snaps
    • throwline (1.75 – 2 mm diameter X 60 meters long)
    • 10-14 oz. throwbag
Note: ATP can allow two to share saddle and rope or will consider providing some basic equipment upon request at registration.
