Modern Chainsaw Field Safety & Maintenance

Don Picker of ATP evaluates a trainee's techniqueThe chainsaw is one of the most potentially dangerous tools when not handled properly in tree work practices. ATP understands the proper way to handle a chainsaw and how to efficiently use this dynamic tool in order to accomplish safe and productive work. In this Two Day CFS Module ATP program of training we will introduce the attendees to selection of various chainsaws and explain size and application. The attendee will also learn how to select and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) especially as it relates to tree cutting and felling. A thorough course of study will be included covering;

  • Fuel and oil mixture and use
  • Chainsaw field maintenance and cleaning
  • Troubleshooting and repair of common problems
  • Proper tensioning and sharpening
  • Discussion of chainsaw dynamics and potential hazards-kickback
  • first aid supplies and training for response

Much more will be covered and the second day will include:ATP Chainsaw Field Safety and Maintenance Training
  • Chainsaw starting & position of hands and feet
  • Work planning and preparation
  • Site and tree inspection for safety
  • Safe felling practices
  • Use of ropes and basic rigging techniques
  • Safe limbing and bucking of felled trees


ATP is prepared to provide this training and also include an assessment of workers to determine levels of competency and safety in chainsaw handling.

Basic Requirements

Basic requirements for attendance:

  • at least 18 years of age.
  • no physical or health condition that may create unreasonable risk for climber or others.
  • a minimum set of tools.
    • approved safety helmet (personal, one user)
    • Approved eye protection
    • Proper climbing clothing (proper fitting long trousers & long or short sleeved shirt)
    • Approved tree climbing boots (leather construction that supports the ankle)
    • Proper fitting gloves that permit strong grip
    • Approved, tree climbing rope – 40 meters long
    • Tree climbing lanyard  (2-N-1 recommended; two sides with three double-locking carabiners or snaps)
    • 3 Double-lock carabiners and/or double-locking snaps
    • throwline (1.75 – 2 mm diameter X 60 meters long)
    • 10-14 oz. throwbag
Note: ATP can allow two to share saddle and rope or will consider providing some basic equipment upon request at registration.
